I think the other aspect that has people upset is the nonstop coverage of a shooting of a CEO, and hardly anything about the kindergarten kids who were shot and killed on the same day (that gunman took his own life so I can understand why a manhunt is more newsy but still). The outpouring did surprise me but as you’ve pointed out in your book I think it’s more the disassociation from treating this guy as an individual and instead as a symbol. No one deserves to die like that.

As an aside, our health insurance went up 23% for next year. The focus on cost while getting treatment is very stressful, particularly when you’re stressed enough as it is by being sick.

Loved the magnet-iron filings analogy. Great image. It’s a joy to read such good writing

I suggest it's much more significant that Lorenz then posted the picture of a different (still alive) CEO. To me, it's quite revealing the amount of nastiness that she gets away with, due to being, in my phrasing, a "club member". If she wasn't considered One-Of-Us, she'd be getting roasted now for engaging in *STOCHASTIC TERRORISM!!!*, along with arguably committing misogyny too (for targeting a *woman* CEO).

But, really, isn't much of the reaction an elaborate version of:

"The law locks up the hapless felon

who steals the goose from off the common,

but lets the greater felon loose

who steals the common from the goose."

I think there's a much deeper social issue going on, about which group morals should dominate public expression. What qualifies a person as inside or outside the protection of the group? (what if e.g. Elon Musk posted the exact same stuff Lorenz did?).

On a different note, these are hilarious, but maybe mostly to people in the US:

"Our records indicate that you failed to obtain prior authorization before seeking care for the gunshot wound to your chest. While we acknowledge the emergent nature of the situation, our policy requires that all non-preventative services, including "unexpected chest injuries," be pre-approved through our 24/7 Prior Authorization Hotline. Unfortunately, our hotline received no such call during your ambulance transport or at any point before your admission to the emergency room."
